Where to Find the Engine Model-Type-Code The model-type-code is a series of 12 characters designated to identify the model number, engine type, and the engines code number (date). Several parts, especially the vacuum hoses, look similar but have different specifications, so its important that you check the exact replacement part number on the parts diagram for your specific engine model. For a walk-behind lawnmower, there are three places where you can find the model-type-code: 1.On the front of the engine, directly above the spark plug 2.On the front of the engine, between the air cleaner and the OHV symbol 3.On the sheet metal directly above the muffler (either on the right or left side depending on the mower model) For riding mowers, you can find the engine model-type-code in these locations: 1.For V-twin engines, the model-type-code is the first 12 characters stamped on the metal on top of the cylinder (either on the right or left side of the engine). 2.For single-cylinder engines, the model-type-code is also the first 12 characters stamped on top of the cylinder. 3.For later models, the model-type-code can be found on a tag located on top of the engine near the rotating screen. For horizontal engines on pressure washers, pumps, tillers, portable generators, and other power equipment, here are the model-type-code locations: 1.On the OHV rocker cover (either on the rewind or opposite the rewind side of the engine). The model-type-code is the lower 11-12 characters stamped on the metal. 2.On a label on the side of the fuel tank. 3.For smaller late-models, the model-type-code is stamped directly on the metal near the spark plug. 4.For mid-size late-models, the model-type-code is on a metal tag located directly above the rewind starter. Once you know your engine model-type-code, you can easily check its parts diagrams online. Part number 596596163 is number 918 on the Cylinder Head, Rocker Arm Cover, and Intake Manifold diagram for most compatible models.
